Each trail should include a brief summary of the situation, a historical background to the region at hand and a sightseeing guide giving an overview of the places of interest. In tackling Napoleon’s endeavours in this way, the reader is thus not only transported to a certain thematically independent point in Napoleon’s campaign but also to a particular geographical area, be it an entire region, a city, a valley or merely a small village. The idea is that the travel guide will appeal both to the traveller visiting Italy and to the “couch” reader, both of whom will emerge feeling enriched.
